For someone with dementia or Alzheimer's who is familiar with poker or other card games, the names of the hands and their relative values are so familiar that they are almost automatic. It is an "overlearned" skill. This activity draws on that familiarity.

In this fun activity, we recreate the feeling of playing poker without the decision making and strategizing necessary in the real game. The poker hands are already made up on laminated cards, with matching templates. The instructions describe a variety of activities ranging from naming the hands, to matching them to the templates, to sorting them by relative "value" and finally to playing a game of poker. As the person with dementia's confidence increases, we increase the challenge and build on their success.
