Singing Around the Birdhouse 35 Piece Sequenced Jigsaw Puzzle

100% of 100

Vibrantly colored birds enjoying a sunny day at the birdhouse - perfect for the bird lover. The image offers lots of opportunity for fun conversations - "How many birds are there?", "Are any two the same?", "Can you see a cardinal?"

Using our unique sequencing guidance, even people with dementia or Alzheimer's who find puzzles too challenging can usually complete these puzzles successfully.

You may see other puzzles with this image, but only the Keeping Busy Sequenced Puzzle is color coded and designed for people with dementia and Alzheimer's.

  • Cognitive challenge
  • Color coding guides person to success
  • Pieces are divided into six groupings to adjust level of difficulty

The puzzle is a brightly colored 35 piece tray puzzle with pieces large and thick enough to be easy to handle but not so large that they don't look like jigsaw pieces. The pieces fit together in a tray that has a grey image of the puzzle printed on it and each piece outlined to show its placement, but the real magic is in the color sequencing.

The puzzle pieces come pre-sorted into groups according to their placement on the puzzle – top, side, bottom, etc. Each group of pieces is presented to the person individually. By following the colored clues on the tray and the sequence of steps in the instructions, the person is guided to successfully place the pieces without help. This is repeated for each group until the puzzle is complete. Because the person is generally able to select and place the pieces on their own, they have a great feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment (often accompanied by a big smile).

As the person becomes more proficient, more than one group can be presented at once, making the activity more challenging.

Included in the package is a laminated sheet showing the finished puzzle in full color to use as a guide. Not only are these puzzles colorful and fun to do, they are great conversation starters when selected to match the interests of the person.

Lots of pieces - frustrating

A person with dementia often finds jigsaw puzzles to be overwhelming, even if the puzzle only has a small number of large size pieces.

Sequenced puzzles for dementia and Alzheimer's are achievable

Our unique "Sequenced Jigsaw Puzzles" overcome this problem by allowing the person to work with only the number of pieces that they are comfortable with. The pieces come presorted into color coded bags that match the colored outline on the puzzle tray. Each piece has a corresponding colored dot on the back.

Success and Accomplishment!
Leading to feeling of success and accomplishment

Start by offering the pieces from only one bag at a time. If the person finds this too easy, increase the challenge by offering the pieces from more than one bag. With a little guidance, a person with dementia or Alzheimer's can complete the puzzle on their own leading to a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Top Border...
Start with the top border

Most people start a puzzle by completing the border first, and that's how we do it. Starting with the first bag, the person works on the top border.

Rest of the Border...
Next, complete the rest of the borders

Once that is complete, the pieces in each of the next three bags are used (one at a time) to complete the rest of the border.

Inside Pieces...
And finish with the inside pieces

Finally, the pieces in the last two bags are used to finish the puzzle.

Put the Puzzle Away...
And finish by putting the pieces away

But that's not the end of the activity! The final step is for the person to take the puzzle apart and sort the pieces back into the color coded bags. You will be amazed by the look of satisfaction from not only completing the puzzle but then helping out by putting it away on their own.
