Implementing Montessori: Small Group Programming

A lot of attention has been directed at small group programming for dementia patients and studies show that it is more effective than programming offered to large groups, particularly for people with dementia. Unfortunately the reality of limited resources in a facility restricts our ability to offer programs to small groups of 4 to 6 participants.

Or does it?

  • Proven effective in homes and facilities across the country

This one day workshop teaches how to implement effective Montessori-based Small Group Programming for patients with dementia or Alzheimer's given the constraints in a typical facility. The session starts by demonstrating the need for a new approach and follows through with a plan to accomplish it.

The participants work in groups to apply the Montessori principles to existing programs, modifying them so that they can be presented simply and effectively in half an hour or less to a small group of 4 to 6 dementia residents. Participants then practice presenting the modified programs, experiencing the benefits for themselves. Finally, the steps for successful implementation are outlined.

The outcome of this Small Group Programming approach is better quality of life for residents by

  • Spending less time portering/planning/preparing and more time engaging the residents
  • Giving them the stimulation they need, when they need it, in their own environment
  • Creating a routine that provides consistency

As the routine is established, other staff, volunteers and family will help out and join in the fun.
